Canada Sings the American Songbook – A Canadian Tribute to New York

The Canadian Association of New York (CANY), in association with the Consulate General of Canada in New York, presents Canada Sings the American Songbook: A Canadian Tribute to New York, featuring a top-flight roster of Canadian musical talent performing a set list that samples over 100 years of American song writing.

This one-night-only concert event that will take place on Wednesday, September 7th, 8:00pm, at Symphony Space’s prestigious Peter Jay Sharp Theatre (Broadway at 95th Street).

This Canadian musical tribute to the magic and resilience of New York will commemorate the upcoming 10th anniversary of the events of 9/11/01 and include performances by such musical luminaries as world-renowned tenor Ben Heppner, Cape Breton fiddler extraordinaire Natalie MacMaster, iconic Late Show with David Letterman Musical Director Paul Shaffer, “Life is a Highway” hit-maker Tom Cochrane, Broadway’s Tyley Ross, singer-songwriter Kate Schutt, jazz pianist and singer Laila Biali, soul sensation Dione Taylor, stage and recording artist Robert Pilon, and more. Produced and emcee’d by Jeff Breithaupt (whose annual Canada Day celebrations at Joe’s Pub have become a New York concert-calendar staple) and led by Musical Director (and Ottawa native) Peter Kiesewalter, this unprecedented musical tribute promises to shed new light on the American songbook – from Gershwin to Guthrie, the Duke to the Boss, Marvin to Carole to Cole to Joel and beyond – all while celebrating the enduring strength of a singular city.

Against the backdrop of the 10th anniversary remembrance, the tribute concert event will also honor the 26 Canadian families who lost loved ones on 9/11/01. All net proceeds from the concert will be distributed to pertinent New York-based charities, including the 9/11 Tribute Center and the 9/11 Memorial.
